Cosmopolitan Cultures

Many facets of culture are manifested in the Canaries. On each of the seven Islands there are a multitude of options in all fields of culture: music, theatre, literature... These options are there to be enjoyed in the concert halls, theatres and arts centres of the Canary Islands.

You can attend any of the numerous cultural events whose prestige is  acknowledged all over Europe such as the Festival of Classical Music, which takes place simultaneously on all seven Islands; the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Film Festival; the Spanish marketplace for new film productions at the Lanzarote Screenings; opera and zarzuela seasons at the Pérez Galdós Theatre (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and performances at the Guimerá Theatre (Santa Cruz de Tenerife); art exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Lanzarote, at the "El Tanque" Cultural Space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and at the Atlantic Centre for Modern Art in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, also the home of the Canarian Museum, where it is possible to gain an insight into the remote past of the Canary Islands, as you can at the Museum of Nature and Man (Santa Cruz de Tenerife).

But there is another kind of culture linked to the traditions of the people: the five-yearly Fiestas Lustrales on La Palma, with the famous Dance of the Dwarves; the descent of Our Lady of the Kings, on El Hierro, or the majestic floral carpets made each year for the Corpus Christi festival in La Orotava (Tenerife), apart from Canarian wrestling and the Gomeran whistling language, which are ancestral traditions in a land where many and varied cultures and peoples have come together.

The social diversity of the Canaries as a meeting point in the Atlantic has given rise to other events which have proved popular. Such events as the Canary Islands Music Festival, the Canarian edition of the Womad Festival, the Atlantica Festival, the Son Latinos Festival, for Latin music and salsa, and the International Jazz Festival, as regards music; the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, the Lanzarote Film Festival and the Festival of Nature in Puerto de la Cruz on The Island of  Tenerife, in the field of cinema; international exhibitions in the range of museums and galleries to mention but a few enjoy a high degree of prestige locally and are each well known in the international cultural sphere.

Sport & Leisure

The Canary Islands are a force in world tourism, offering an advanced service infrastructure that is capable of satisfying any demand: hotels, bungalows and apartments of the highest calibre, restaurants specialising in traditional Canarian or other national cuisines, together with sports facilities and superb night life, including casinos, discotheques and night clubs. These are the services which, in combination with the temperate and stable climate year round, attract millions of overseas visitors from all over the world.
There are likewise a large number of theme parks on all of The Islands, which are concentrated in the vicinity of the major holiday resorts.

The rich and varied tapestry of landscapes in the Canaries offers the ideal setting for all kinds of sports, including horse-riding, mountain biking, tennis, water sports such as windsurfing, game fishing and diving to name but a few.

Apart from the incomparable natural environment, the Canaries have a range of countryside accommodation and complementary services enabling the visitor to take part in so-called ecological or alternative activities, such as trekking, rock-climbing, hill-walking, potholing, paragliding, hang-gliding, bike excursions and adventure sports which complement these new ways of getting close to nature and getting to know people and places which it would be quite impossible to come across in any other way.

Golf and leisure go hand in hand in the Canary Islands. The natural beauty of the surroundings is complemented by the quality of the facilities. It is possible to play golf twelve months a year since the climate, even in summer, is mild and reliable. There is a highly varied range of courses with all the services you would expect, including the oldest in Spain, the Royal Las Palmas Golf Club at Bandama, which was founded in 1871.

Alongside the select accommodation options, there are modern facilities for congresses, conventions and trade fairs supported by an extensive network of companies supplying all kinds of specialist services: sophisticated equipment, audio-visual productions and catering as well as hiring of translators, interpreters, conference hostesses and public relations officers.  All of this has led the Canaries to become the setting for some of the most outstanding international events - classical music festivals, opera, dance, theatre, cinema- and conventions of acknowledged prestige.

All of this infrastructure makes The Islands the ideal location to deal with the key issues in the third millennium in an atmosphere which is relaxed, peaceful, sunny and in harmony with nature in state of the art facilities combining leisure and business in a real paradise of nature.
